How schizoid?

Inner thoughts, Society 17 Comments »

schizoiddb.jpgI’ve read a post on PsyForums where a teenager was wondering if he had SPD. A nice, definitively on the good side of the fence young man (not saying that because he is obviously a bit introvert). Made me wonder how many people think they could have a SPD…

So here is how schizoid I am (again it’s just me) so you can compare:

Omnimax’s slogan :

Activities No Comments »

Today we went to the Omnimax see « Deep Sea ». It’s not the first time we go to an Omnimax, but I had never pay much attention to their “slogan”.Right before the show a deep voice states the obvious advantages of Omnimax (Canadian invention, makes me SOOOOO proud ;-)  hum…), sound, giant dome screen, mega projector, etc… then the speech ends with that anodyne sentence:

“Omnimax: It’s bigger than your imagination!”

Well they obviously have no idea what they are talking about… And if they have a bit of imagination, they could find less flat slogans…

Imagination my friend, as no limits… Just going to the Omnimax and coming back ( I was not driving), I had already enough in my head to challenge some cable network evening programs…

Important disclaimers before going forward:

  1. I personally do not believe in classifying people into tables. My own belief is that INDIVUDUALS are UNIQUE (it just so happen that in our society there are not much individuals).
  2. I STRONGLY advise that you look into yourself and KNOW yourself very well before taking any online personality test. They are not meant to inform you of who you are. You should know who you are by yourself. A test (if it is good and honestly answered) will just put a name or label on what you already knew.

So, as I prepared that site I made quiet extensive research and crossed path with an awful lot of online therapy and self help sites, or other “let us give you your personality profile for (insert fee here)”… Usually that crap is 100% commercial, trying to have some kind of “medical” feel to it but full of ads and always ending having something to sell you (book, meds, counseling, your profil…) DO NOT FALL FOR IT! Those sharks are surfing the trendy wave of anxiety. Of course most people feel “inadequate” or “stressed” or “anxious”, they live in a society that goes pretty much against any natural instincts we may have as mammals, so yeah people don’t feel so “well”…

While researching I tumbled on a site pretty much dedicated only to online personality testing. Just one ad on top, no selling, nor pushing you toward anything of the like. I first thought I should take the “personality disorder” test because it will make for great bashing in the blog…

Well I got to admit I cannot bash it. It worked for me, pretty accurate too. Remember: you have to answer HONESTLY (not the way you would like to appear, it is just you behind the keyboard, no lies) and keep in mind it is a COMPUTERIZED assessment (which mean it’s very close to what 95% of the therapists are doing when check marking your answers on their pre-printed forms, no no I am kidding… Sort of… Well it is computerized so no margin to interpretation, hence some results “discrepancies”.)

Let’s just comment my testing (I took it several times, always scoring the same into 2 to 4 % margin, this was the first attempt)

Let me tell you about one of my coworkers; A profound devout, every Sundays church goer and proud catholic family mother of three.

This story begin 4 years ago, when her younger son (around 6 at the time) was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). A wonderful news followed by the lay off of her husband from his job, then a few months after, by the death of her father, followed quickly by the suicide of her brother (or sister, can’t remember).

That’s when her older son had behavioral issues and was interned for a time. So 2 years ago she fell into depression and stopped working while, I presume, adjusting to things…

School bus

This afternoon I went waiting for my daughter’s bus on the corner of our street. I am usually at work when she comes back, but since I had taken the day off to stay with my wife, I went while the later was napping, recovering from her journey to the medical center. It’s cold outside (-13C), I am all alone in the street because all the other kids at that stop are older and have no need for a tutor to pick them up. I am looking at the sky, watching the fumes from my own respiration climbing up, sliding slowly into my inner world when:

- “Hello”

batmobile.jpgMy wife had an appointment this morning for an analysis requiring her to go under general anaesthesia. (Stomach troubles)I took the day off so to be able to bring her there for 9h30 , get her back at 12h, en stay around the house in the afternoon while she recovers.

The getting there was a breeze, she drove, we discussed on the road so I did not have the occasion to slip into my inner imagination, its ok it’s only morning, plenty of time to do so.

Then we arrived, parked, stepped out of the car, I switched to “total shutdown from the outside world” mode. Things started having a life of their own around me, stuff is happening that I am not a part of, I “see” and “hear” like a distant time watcher observing life in the past from the comfort of his futuristic chair, a bit like us reading a book, I am not really there anymore. As we enter the building, I shut the sound; white noise is in place now, the only vocal I can hear is my wife. As we enter the elevator I tweak the sight as well, narrow visioning only my wife, I follow her thru what is probably a crowded waiting room.

Exchange of information  between my wife and a clerk or nurse, I make a mental note of only the relevant information pertaining to me (it’s a 2h procedure, my wife will call me from the recovery room when awake), then it’s kiss goodbye and back to the Batmobile.
