The end of World records

Inner thoughts No Comments »

olympicbrain.jpgMy wife was thinking that at one point there will be no more sporting records to break. I mean human physiology has its limits, and our physiological evolution is way slower than our recent learning pace. So at one point all training techniques will not be able to make a human body go over its physical limitation…

At that point all sportsmen/sportswomen of a specific discipline will just tend towards the ultimate goal of the maximum record attainable for a human being, knowing it could not be break anymore.

Turns out, researching a bit the subject, that this theory is actually right. The IRMES (Institute for Biomedical Research and Sports Epidemiology in Paris) backed by four other university and medical research facilities produced a report stating than:

  • in 1896 (first modern Olympic Games) 75% of the human integrated muscle biology was used to break world records.
  • In 2007 Athletes are using 99% of the physical maximum potential.
  • Half of the World records will not have improved more than 0,05% by 2027.
  • The wall will be hit in 2060, when no more records could be break without substantial physical/genetic evolution.

Will we then bend dimensions and space time continuum to break those physical limitations with technology? (my wife’s idea, not mine) or will humankind start working on its mind improvement at last? Because let me remind you that we are very far from using 99% of the potential of our brains…

Who knows, starting 2060 we might see “Olympics Mind Games” with several disciplines like: spirit, mind, creativity, theory, culture, imagination, intelligence, troubleshooting…

Sold!

sold.jpgYes, the house is sold, after 35 visits in 6 days… Honestly I was not home most of the week-end; we went to lunch out on Saturday and stayed out. And on Sunday while my wife and my daughter went to two birthday parties, I went off for one of my legendary movie day (only 3 movies though, so pretty slow day, I had no car so was forced to stay in the same theatre). Actually I came back home by -26C (a 25-30 minutes’ walk), that’s how much I needed the movies after this week…

Yesterday we reviewed the offers, one could not be passed on, so we concluded the deal (420kCAN$, very good, actually the standing record, for a three bedrooms in our street). I finished this endeavour with irritations on the right hand, some kind of eczema most probably due to all that agitation in my own home for the past days (see even if I think I did pretty well psychologically, my body reacted to all those peoples like they were an allergen ;-) ).

My wife was ecstatic (she was thinking we’ll get between 375k and 400k).
I was just glad to see our agent leave (after having to make small talks for an hour waiting for the other party to come and sign the papers) knowing that now I can take a crap without asking myself how much time I have left to squeeze it before someone enters…

And you call that a school?

Society No Comments »

nobook.jpgThis week-end, well there was the nightmare of all the visits, but that’s not the point… My daughter was reading a comic to me. In one picture there is a kid entering his school at morning. You can see kids playing ball in the background, some other playing marble on the left side, and, a little girl seated against a wall and reading a book. My daughter stops and says “whoa, she’s lucky; she can read in her school…” I am like “well of course you can read in school“. My daughter looks at me and tell me “No, it’s forbidden to read outside the classroom in my school“…

I am like, no way, I misheard that, so I make her repeat, and explain what she means. Turns out the kids are not allowed books outside the classroom (even their own personal ones!!!) That’s not all; while discussing what they were doing outside, it was clear they are very pushed towards physical and group activities (ok she needs to get social, but if she does not want to, I’d like her to have a choice…)  And when it’s to cold outside?… Brace yourself… They… watch TV!!?!!!

So in her school I can easily have her a lunch without pork under religious pretexts (parents, move your ass and do it yourself, or put the little worshipers in a private school!), but I cannot have my daughter read a book or be intellectual as she sees fit. Nice “public” education system indeed…

Apathy? Did you say apathy?

Inner thoughts 10 Comments »

When it comes to doing nothing, feeling empty, even worthless (since there is nothing you can do that will make a dent in the universe anyway, so why bother?) I had my share. The apathy is a very serious problem (probably the main cause of depression for schizoids), yet it’s pretty normal that this will occur in the course of that condition…

When you spend your life introverting, you cannot do otherwise but foreseeing things, playing with theories, “what ifs”, and when you do so, believe me, you cannot turn optimistic, at all… You see the world around you, you analyze it, you try to make sense of it, but when you are schizoid, few feelings are entering into the balance to dazzle you like the others, and you can just see it for what it is: A huge mistake spiraling down the drain exponentially!

Well the Universe I am fine with, the problem is human kind, mind you… Anyway… At first it was “I see it, I can make something about it”, then comes the “no way I can make them understand” and in the years “Who am I to think I could do something anyway”, then “Why the hell do I care, leave me alone”. But you see, we humans are genetically designed to be thrive onto “leaving a mark on the world”; making babies, building stuff (well breaking it is easier so that works well too…), shaping nature, defy the laws of our environment, playing gods… And when you consciously deny that to yourself because you are well aware of its absurdity, well your reptilian brain (deeper and more primal part of our brain) it does not like it… And it goes “You don’t want to make a mark? You don’t want to fulfill your prime programming? You don’t want to do a thing? Well then, DO NOTHING THEN, HAVE TASTE FOR NOTHING THEN, WHY DON’T YOU JUST GO LIE DOWN AND DIE THEN…” And that’s when the apathy begins… Read the rest of this entry »

Please do not turn American

Moods, Society No Comments »

fr-us-flag.jpgFrench have the nasty habit of copying the US. Usually a few years down the road, and sadly, usually not copying the better sides of it… They got trash TV, fast food, credit cards, people magazines… But It still takes 3 years to create a company, any invention finishes in a drawer or is ultimately exploited by others (microchip, HDTV [yes 20 years ago D2MAC transmitted thru national satellites!!!], so many medical researches that I lost count, etc…), and of course you progress in work thru age instead of efficiency (very annoying because honestly elder does not necessarily mean better…)

Paradoxically, every generation (around 25 years) The French reject a big part of that flawed legacy. For example hamburger fast food are not trend anymore, they adapted the concept, something like, fast-fine cuisine. And very recently new laws came out to protect cultural programs on national TV.

It’s due to the fact that France is the native birth of the critic philosophical movement. And over there, you criticize only what you know… So they have to copy / use the stuff for a while, then have the critic process, then discard it. Of course it is now a very long process in our era of Internet and fast communication, and it leaves some serious tracks in the economy some times.

Which is why I stand today, asking, begging my follow French citizens: DO NOT WAIT 25 YEARS, WE GOTTA MOVE FASTER NOW. Example:

“Le nouvel observateur” (French information press magazine) is turning American (trash people magazine) with its “sarkomania”, even going up to intercept and publish text messages from the president and his ex-wife. WE DON’T FREAKING GIVE A RAT’S ASS what the president personal life is, never did, never should. We had presidents with “out of wedding locks” kids, we had divorced presidents, gay mayors, never mattered! They are here to make the country work not to give us life lessons…

An American president has some fun with a cigar, it makes the world news for a year, fine, it’s the States… But jeez, not in France!! Not in the country of libertinage!

So please, don’t wait 25 years, we already know it’s absurd so act now: Cancel your subscription, send them resumes for journalist jobs (obviously they are missing a lot of good ones), ask for their subventions to be downgraded to a non-informational magazine (like porn and commercial magazines). You want to be Americans? Well prove you have what it takes; move your ass and ACT NOW!

Our extrovert friends

Encounters, Work 2 Comments »

A word on one of my « coworkers ». He is the database administrator at work, in fact the best damn DBA I had the pleasure to work with. He is self taught in this field, changed career several times.

He is also pretty handy with systems (Windows / Linux) not just Databases, does some neat programming too. Hard worker, reliable, efficient, dependable. On a personal side, he is married, traveled quite a bit in Australia, has four and half daughters (two + twins + a newly discovered pre marriage older one…) Two years ago he decided to shape it up a bit, and he is now a marathon man (already 3 marathons done). Redid pretty much everything in his house, got a few websites, etc…

Yes, I like him. He is an “individual”, which be my standards is a pretty high status already. He has also earned my respect both professionally and personally, which is pretty much the top of my pyramid before sleeping with me…

Last year, he came in my office (good times, no shared office then, I was acting director while my boss was working for the ministry of education for a year) and told me he was just diagnosed a mild bipolar with Tourette traits. Of course I already knew he was an unusual guy, this, just like for me, was just putting a label, a name, on his personality.

Bipolars do have some pretty definite med treatments, which he adapted to very well, keeping the strengths while shoving away the bad sides of bipolar (harsh decisions, destructive behaviors and such…). It’s normal, I do believe there is little he could not achieve, he’s “the man” after all (private joke).

See, another proof than extraordinary individuals can’t be “normal” peoples, by definition. Sure he is on the extrovert scale, sure I won’t discuss Kafka or geopolitics with him, sure I won’t hit bars with him either, but none the less, he is one of those that are standing out of the mass (in a good way, not in a mass-murderer clown politician kind of way [not targeting anyone in particular here]).

And if I deal with a particularly hard project with impossible goals and tight schedule, guess who I’ll turn towards to? I’ll choose an extrovert friend over any sheep, anytime!

The Hell House

Encounters, Familly, Society No Comments »

hellhouse.jpgNo it’s not Amityville, it’s my home… I was not prepared… Four to five visits yesterday and the same the day before…

Now I can deal with the occasional repair guy checking the furnace or the meters, as I am aware long in advance of his coming, and he is usually in one place of the house when I am in another for the duration of his work. But 15 minutes notice to get perfect strangers roaming in the entire premises for half an hour was a shock!
I could not block, I could not think straight, I could not focus, I even think I just panicked at a point (reading emails that I had already read previously)… I am not used to fake or use all my artillery in my own house, I am telling you it felt like I was 20 years back thru time, when I had poor control and was easily overwhelmed by people!
Hart beat up the roof, sweating, hands slightly shaking, cold along the spine… All long forgot symptoms that came rushing back at me for some insane reasons.

It’s been a sad reality check that a lot of SPD “features” come with constant struggling to keep them at bay. And that life is way more difficult for avoidants (which I even am not!!!!! Unbelievable…) Another proof also, that my “don’t care / can’t touch me / fully armored” attitude IS a defense mechanism… (it’s clearly not just chemistry at that point as I WAS FEELING pretty bad yesterday).

Anyway yesterday I was more prepared, kept focus on my work and all. Tonight should be peachy, but I now feel like a stranger in my own house (being careful when I pee, eat, shower…) always on the lookout like I will be outside. Let’s hope we’ll sell it fast!
