Disorder or not disorder, that is the question…

Society Add comments

disorder.jpgHa the polemic around that little “D” at the end of SP(D), it’s around, it’s in the air. Can we, should we dim as “disordered” everyone that thinks differently (that is “not within society norms”)?

Evidently my site being called “A schizoid Personality” And most of my references section having “disorder” put between quotation marks (then I stopped for more clarity), that gives you an idea of where I stand…

Nonetheless I admit that “What does not conform is disordered” is a valid logic. It’s also a simple one (often used in dictatorships) that even computers have outgrown (see fuzzy logic v/s pure binary logic).

Medically speaking:

- Schizoids are not a threat to themselves or to others (aka the society).

- A “personality disorder” is characterized by “rigid and ongoing patterns of thought and action“, and yet I have never met more open minds and free spirits than amongst schizoids…

- Those patterns “often cause serious personal and social difficulties“. Even if my marriage was to end today, I will still have succeeded in more stability than 50% of Americans (are they all disordered?), I have a good job (one that suits me, that is my definition of a good job, not the income), and I have zero difficulties (as in cannot live my life properly) with society, it seems she does with me…

- Those patterns “deviate markedly from the expectations of the culture of the individual who exhibits them“. Here we are… Not conform! Hum wasn’t it the excuse the Russian government had to give electroshock treatments to their political dissidents (ugly capitalists…)

So medically speaking, why disorder?

Socially speaking:

                - Well it really is the last point of the previous section isn’t it? Not conform = bad = disorder.

- Do you really think the society is “ordered”? With its wide spreading? (10Billion individuals = planetary over population, we are at 6.5 exponentially growing, it is in less than a generation…) With its “lets ravage the planet ecosystem/energies at will” attitude? (It’s ok I don’t worry much for the planet, she have 6 000 000 000 years to recover from our miserable 30 000 years of existence and less than 150 years of nuisances). With its “lets the South die while we get richer every day up North, but do send some god worshippers there to make believe we care, and sleep better” logic? (Do revert to the 40s European life style with no tv, barely no cars, hard manual labour, no running water, no residential electricity… Share the gross amongst all, that should put everyone on the same level).

So if society is not ordered, doesn’t it make schizoids more “ordered”?

In the end:

I am afraid it is a question of semantic. Even I, am the first to admit being different… If you want to call it a disorder, fine. But please, to not get all fussy when I decide not to. It so happens that for me what is different is not necessarily scary, wrong, bad, malevolent, etc… It can be, but not necessarily so. And in the case of Schizoid Personality, I really don’t think it’s a bad thing (aka a disorder). I actually think it’s a good thing.
If you believe Diderot, Rousseau, Danton, Lincoln, Armstrong, Einstein, Davinci… were following “the norms”, if you believe the people win revolutions “by themselves”, then felicitation, your brainwash is complete. Still, try to think of that:

The first gal who decided to master fire instead of fearing it must have been quite a weirdo in her own time, and yet, where will we be without her?
