Is it me or incompetent people are everywhere now days?Just this morning I had a striking example. As I burst in my office reasonably late (it’s winter, it’s Canada, what do you expect, I was stuck in the snow) I see a guy staring at my desk. I haven’t finish putting my backpack down, ignoring the intrusion in my own space, that the guy asks me to move my desk…
It’s not usually what I do when I start my day so I have to wonder:
- “for?”
- “Gotta check the panel behind your desk to fix the heating system”
Apparently it has been cold in our offices for the past two days. I would not know since I was in a new school to install the network (very good, a big school pretty much empty, just me, three hub rooms, 12 fibers, 760 cables and a few data equipments).
The thing is my desk is a corner unit completely squeezed beside shelves. Before just “moving” it I got to unplug my dual screen system, two servers, the phone, and shove a couple hundred docs. And even then I won’t be able to move it. The only solution will be to unscrew the corner peace and lift it, leaving the side free to be moved.
Luckily I don’t have to explain that to the guy, a coworker does the job for me, asking if it is really necessary for the guy to access that particular panel since moving my desk will be “tricky” at best:
- ” Well if you want heat, I do”
Of course I can’t stop myself and I reply:
- “I don’t necessarily want heat, but I guess my colleagues will disagree…”
An hour later I am done moving all the stuff and the guy starts dealing with is panel while I grab my laptop and occult his presence to concentrate on the work at end after three days out of the office.
15 minutes and he asks if there is any thermostat in the place. There is none since all is centrally managed by facilities, I show him the sensor. There is a blank; he tells me he is done.
Another hour and a half later (always longer to put things back together) I am up and running again. As for the repair of the heating system: there was none. Turns out the sensor was falsely indicating 23C instead of the real 18C and so the heater wasn’t starting believing all was fine and dandy. Just had to reset the sensor…
I am glad I wasted my matinee so you could access “the panel”, mister guy… It’s been my pleasure…
